NBA Stars! is a sports betting tipster service which is being offered through the Betfan stable of tipsters. As the name suggests, you are betting exclusively on the NBA.
Introduction to NBA Stars!
I’ve been doing this for long enough to know that tipster services come and go. A lot. Honestly, I can’t even begin to tell you how often I have seen a tipster service being advertised, only to find that 6 months later it has been dropped. Of course, this is a pattern that you see a lot with the more questionable tipsters that crop up every other week. But it is also something that you see surprisingly often with tipster stables too. And in my experience, this is usually because they push out a service after a good few month. A dip in form later, and they are gone.
All of this is incredibly pertinent, because today’s subject, NBA Stars! , is actually a service that I followed keenly when Betfan first launched it. All the while expecting it to simply fall off. However, here we are, compiling a full review on a tipster service that has ultimately stood the test of time and produced some seemingly quite impressive results. But most importantly, it has done so in a niche market that makes it a perfect consideration for somebody who is trying to build a betting portfolio.
With that said, there is a lot to consider here. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that whilst Betfan definitely paint a pretty picture in terms of results, I’m not quite convinced that all is as it seems with NBA Stars! . And I’m not just talking about something minor here. It is honestly, potentially a deal breaker for this service. So, let’s get straight to it.
What Does NBA Stars! Offer?
Whilst there are a few things that I will be talking about in terms of Betfan in this look at NBA Stars! , there is one thing that I think that they should be commended on. They have been around for a fair old time now, and they have very much standardised the management side of their tipster stable. This means that, at the very least, you can except things to operate smoothly.
First things first, let’s talk logistics and what is required of you. As you would probably expect from pretty much any tipster service in this day and age, NBA Stars! selections are sent out directly via email. These contain all of the information that you would want to/expect to see including odds advice. However, it is all ultimately quite basic in my opinion.
As well as being sent out via email, there are other ways of getting access to your tips. Selections are also made available through a member’s area on the Betfan website, as well as on the Betfan app. These don’t provide anything more to NBA Stars! subscribers than the emails really, but I will always applaud different ways of doing things that will work better for different customers.
Now, I do think that there is something that is quite important to talk about here, and that is odds. When you look at other team based ball games from a purely betting perspective, getting decent odds (and resultantly, value) on an outcome can be a difficult thing to achieve. Not surprisingly to me, the NBA is no different. For some context on this, NBA Stars! typically bets at around the evens mark, topping out very occasionally at higher than 3.0.
Keep in mind that these odds are generally the ones that are based off those advised at the time of selections going out. There can be shifts in this and, sometimes, it can be difficult matching these odds. And because of that, combined with the generally lower odds, I would definitely recommend trying to use a BOG bookmaker, as well as an odds comparison site if I were following NBA Stars! .
Whilst we’re on the topic of the bets, I want to talk about the approach taken here. NBA Stars! covers a lot of different markets in order to pursue that goal of value. That’s fair enough. However, you really should keep in mind that a big part of this is placing multiple bets on the same game. Usually betting on a team to win, and backing that up with an Asian Handicap bet too.
Of course (as Betfan’s proofing demonstrates), when this works, it works very well. A game with pretty outside chances landed on both occasions and ended up with a pretty decent points profit. That is however offset by the fact that when a bet is lost, you are doubling down on those losses too.
And that can get expensive. Because at this point, I feel like I have to talk about the staking plan. You see, all of Betfan’s proofing for the service is to level stakes of 5 points per bet. That means that you’re losing 10 points per bet, and that really starts to add up for a number of different reasons. A big part of that is the volume of bets.
The first thing that is worth noting here is that you aren’t betting every day. However, when you are betting, you’re looking at potentially 5 or 6 games on those betting days. This in turn means 10 or 12 bets. At 5 points per bet. Make no mistake, that is a hell of a lot of money to be betting. Especially when you start to look at how often you win or lose.
Here’s the thing. Betfan don’t publish a strike rate for NBA Stars! . And the way they demonstrate proofing now makes it quite difficult to calculate accurate figures. Honestly, I believe that ultimately, it is probably pretty decent, however, that doesn’t ignore the potential drawdown. Just last month, there were 8 straight losing bets. Whilst they were ultimately offset, using advised stakes that is 40 points down.
How Does NBA Stars! Work?
One of the things that I often find frustrating about Betfan is that they don’t really provide much in the way of useful insight into what their tipsters are doing. NBA Stars! is no different, unfortunately. There is plenty of flowery talk about how the tipster behind the service has been a huge basketball fan for many years, and that they have supposedly been profiting through basketball betting for a while as well.
But that doesn’t really tell you anything. At best, you can say that the tipster behind NBA Stars! has some knowledge of basketball and the NBA, but let’s be frank, that is the absolute bare minimum that you’d expect from anybody who is embarking on a venture as a professional tipster. That they know something about the sport they are betting on.
The fact of the matter is though that this doesn’t really tell you a lot. As such, you are definitely put in a position where you are coming into NBA Stars! a bit blind. And like I always say, there doesn’t have to be a detailed explanation, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to have some understanding of what you are getting yourself into.
If there is one bit of mitigation, it is the fact that Betfan do provide comprehensive proofing for NBA Stars! . Unfortunately, the format that they use isn’t the most accessible. As such, whilst you can quickly and easily get a month by month overview, you do have to traipse through lots of PDF documents to actually get a proper idea of how things play out. Something that is far from ideal, especially in light of how easier simpler methods are to maintain.
What is the Initial Investment?
If you want to sign up to NBA Stars! , then Betfan provide a number of different options if you want to subscribe. The smallest outlay comes from the weekly subscription which is priced at £7 plus VAT. This is however the worst value by a considerable margin.
Next, there is a “monthly” subscription for NBA Stars! . What is note here though is that this is actually billed every 28 days, meaning you can expect to pay out 13 times in a year. Fortunately, it isn’t too pricey at £21plus VAT per “month”.
The best value comes from longer term subscriptions. There is a quarterly subscription which is priced at £59 plus VAT every 90 days. This represents better value than the monthly option, however, you aren’t saving drastic amounts. If you want to get the best possible value out of NBA Stars! , then you should be looking at Betfan’s 6 monthly subscription. With an outlay of £100 plus VAT however, this is the most expensive initial cost.
As a final note, it is worth keeping in mind that there is no real money back guarantee offered with NBA Stars! . Betfan say that they do review refund requests for their products, however, these are not typically offered. Ultimately, this doesn’t count too much against it in my mind, however, it is definitely worth mentioning.
What is the Rate of Return?
Now we come to the profits for NBA Stars! , and this is where things really start to fall down a bit. On the surface of things, it all looks pretty good. Sure 279.33 points in about a year (factoring in Covid) looks like a decent result, and it is certainly more than I would typically expect to see from a tipster in that time period.
The problem however is that all of that is artificially inflated by the stakes. Whether it is intentional or not, if you are betting to level stakes of 5 points, in my mind, you could much better represent your results by looking at level stakes of 1 point. And when you scale NBA Stars! back, Betfan’s claimed profit drops to a much less impressive 55.86 points. That just isn’t great in my opinion.
Conclusion for NBA Stars!
I really wanted to come into NBA Stars! liking this. On paper, this is a service that, if it would tick the boxes, would be a great thing. Especially with that view to integrating it into a wider betting portfolio. Let’s be honest, if you could add 280 points of profit a year to your betting, without infringing on other services, all for a few hundred quid, would you take it? I know I would.
Unfortunately, like so many products I have looked at from Betfan, the realities and the marketing are quite far removed. Because, OK, yes, you could be 280 points up if you were willing to stake 5 points on every single bet. But by the same token, you could be 2,800 points up if you were staking 50 points on every bet. At some point you have to draw a limit on how reasonable it is calculate returns. And for me, that is get the stakes as low as possible, for the most accurate picture.
Which brings me back to that 55.86 points. Because it isn’t even like this is any sort of consistent profit. Betfan’s proofing shows a shade over 100 points being made in February. This means that of those scaled 55.86 points, 20 of them have been made as a result of a really good month. Really, you have been looking at very slow progress otherwise.
It isn’t even like you are being given insight that you can look at and say to yourself “Oh, well, this tipster clearly knows that they’re talking about. Look at them demonstrating their knowledge of basketball by talking about it.”. Instead, you are buying into all of this off the back of “this tipster has been profitable in the past”. And that is an unassailable statement. NBA Stars! has been profitable in the past.
But the problem is that I just don’t believe that profit is enough. And if I’m frank, I don’t believe that the profit will be enough in the future. Not when there are competing services out there who are actually producing the results that Betfan claim for NBA Stars! .
Here’s the bottom line for me. I don’t think this is a terrible service. It has made money, and it operates in a niche. Those are things that are strong positives. But this is an industry that demands value, and rightly so. And I just can’t look at a monthly profit that could generously be described as 5 points, warrants paying out £200 per year for.
